If you’ve traveled I-80 across Wyoming, you’ve probably noticed an incredible set of rocks north of the Freeway, just on the west side of the Lincoln Monument near Laramie. For years we’ve driven past and wondered about them. This year we took the time to look closer.
While not an off-road area, it’s still worth the time on the dirt road to check out the trail. The Vedauwoo (pronounced Vee-Duh-Voo) Recreational Area is part of the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest. The area is filled with Sherman Granite, and the name is a bastardized version of an Arapaho word meaning Earth-born. The site is used by hikers, rock climbing enthusiasts for bouldering, mountain bikers, and campers. It is ten square miles of fascinating outcroppings.
There is a developed camping area for 28 rigs and dispersed camping throughout the area. Big pines and aspens, along with a nice stream, cross the terrain. We used OnX Offroad to help us find the perfect dispersed camping spot, a nice level spot among the rocks and trees.
To get to Vedauwoo, take I-80 to exit 329 in Wyoming, head north, and follow the forest service signs. It’s well worth a stop.
