HB 180 and Adult Education Courses

Beginning Jan. 1, 2023, Utah will require all OHV operators to complete the Utah Off-Highway Vehicle Education Course. Operators under the age of 18 shall possess a youth OHV education certificate in order to operate an OHV on public land, road or trail.

Operators 18 years of age or older may operate an OHV if they possess an approved adult OHV education certificate. The adult test will be available on January 1, 2023.  Visit recreation.utah.gov for updates. These education classes help keep you safe by teaching necessary skills, such as:

  • Safe riding
  • Proper machine sizing
  • Weight distribution
  • Responsible and ethical riding
  • Proper handling and shifting
  • Riding within your ability
  • OHV Education FAQs

On forum discussions, it appears that vehicles with a standard size license plate, are not subject to this requirement; only those with the small license plate. And as usual, we are talking to the choir, but we’re excited that some education, any education is being offered to SXS drivers. It’s long been our position that manufacturers should provide education.

We would encourage all adults, regardless of what you drive off-road, or whether you drive in Utah to take the class and promote it to others. Online education opens January 1, 2023 – you are only required to take and pass the class one-time in your lifetime.
